Identification

Common types of Rats

  1. Roof rats/Black rat/Ship rat/House rat
  2. Norway rats/Brown rats/Common rat/street rat/water rat

What they look like?

Rats have fur that is more prevalent on the body than on the ears and tail. They have small black eyes and long bare tail. Norway rats are large and round, while black rats are long and slim. Rats are medium-sized to large rodents. However, rats may grow to be as long as 40 cm or more and weigh considerably more than mice. The weight of black rats is 110-340 g and for Norway rats is 230 g. Their coats are white, gray, brown or black in color and are often soiled enough to leave grease marks on touched surfaces.

Food

Rats are omnivorous eaters. That means they will eat whatever they can find. In most cases, this includes grains, fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts and any other edibles they might find. Although rats prefer to eat what they find, they will hunt in occasion, catching bugs and other small pests.

Habitat

Where do they like to live?

Rats Homes/Rats Places

Rats nest in burrows but also rat nests can be found in Bark, roofs, and even in cavity walls. Rats love to live inside homes. If they enter at ground level, they usually run up the walls of the home and go into the Roof. The rats usually spend most of their time inside in the Roof Area/False ceiling. But sometimes they create or make their nests, inside the walls of homes, holes and cracks, cupboard, elevated areas of Houses or building, and other soft items.

How Long Rats do live?

Life Cycle

Adult rats can live for about 1-3 years. Females can reach breeding age within 2 months but usually start reproducing at around 5-6 months. The development period lasts about 21-25 days and a usually produces 6-13 rat babies. Rats can typically produce 5-10 liters per year.

Sign of Rats infestation

  1. Rat Droppings

Usually found in concentrated areas as rats produce up to 40 droppings per night. Norway rats dropping is Rectangular in shape and larger with blunt ends. They are found in small groupings 3/4″ long in size. While dropping of Black rats/Roof Rats is curved rectangle shaped with pointed ends. They are scattered. And 1/2″ long in size.

2. Scratching Noises

Hearing scratching noises at night from above may suggest their presence. You may hear them scurrying under decking, sheds and floorboards. They are more likely to be identified by a grinding noise they make with their teeth known as burying.

3. Footprints (running tracks)

Rats leave foot and tail marks in dusty, less-used areas of buildings. To establish if an infestation is active, Fine flour or dust powder is spread along a small stretch of floor near the footprints and check for fresh tracks the next day.

4. Rub Marks

Rodents have grease on their fur. Grease and dirt on their bodies leaves marks on surfaces. Lanolin is yellow viscous oil in the fur that is made of fatty acids and esters. It allows rodents to squeeze into tight voids & spaces with great ease.

5-Urine Odor

Rat urine has a strong musky odor. With large infestation you can easily smell it.

Nests

Mice will shred paper, string, and other pliable materials to build their nests indoors. Norway rats nest outdoors in burrows deep in the ground. Rats typically nest above ground in floor/False ceiling, trees, Cupboard, Holes and crevices, Pipelines or in dense vegetation.
