Identification

Adult houseflies are usually 6 to 7 mm long with a wingspan of 13 to 15 mm. The females tend to be larger winged than males, while males have relatively longer legs. Usually gray in color. Diseases carried by house flies include Typhoid, Cholera and dysentery. Other diseases carried by house flies include salmonella, anthrax and tuberculosis.

House flies have also been known to transmit the eggs of parasitic worms.  Flies vomit and excrete wherever they come to rest and thereby mechanically transmit disease organisms.

Preventive Measures

  1. Use a shallow dish bowl and fill it with an inch of apple cider vinegar and a tablespoon of sugar.
  2. Next, add some fruit-scented dish soap.
  3. You can leave the dish uncovered or tightly covered with plastic wrap. Make sure to poke a few holes in it to attract the flies.
  4. Keep you homes clean.
  5. Remove trash regularly and seal your garbage cans
  6. Clean up pet waste immediately.
  7. Use fine mesh screens on doors and windows to prevent flies from getting into your home.
